The 3D catalog for spare parts, from product to service

New standard for cataloging spare parts, which goes beyond the existing regulations on the manuals for use and maintenance of industrial automation machines

The idea

Although the Machinery Directive requires the Use and Maintenance manual together with the spare parts manual only for safety systems, EMMETI has long decided to offer its customers the complete spare parts catalogs for all installed components, as a company providing high value added service.

Starting from the information provided by SAP management system on the components of each machine, EMMETI decided to move from a catalog based on bi-dimensional drawings to a 3D catalog system.


The transition to the 3D catalog

EMMETI generated non-interactive spare parts catalogs in a manual manner, employing approximately 2 weeks for catalogs of machines made on commission.

The product output was a non-interactive 2D PDF file, which obliged customers to order missing components by phone or email, by entering data manually and with high probability of error during the data entry phase.

To minimize costs and timing and maximize benefits, EMMETI needed a system to automatically generate interactive spare parts catalogs, increasing product sales and customer satisfaction rates.

EMMETI and SYGEST jointly developed a project for the efficiency and automation of the spare parts service: with a program provided at the time of purchase, the customer can perform a progressive navigation "inside" the machine to locate the piece needed (by zooming / rotating or hiding parts of the model), highlight the features of the piece and retrieve the related codes.


The benefits

With this program it is possible to:
  • automate the internal processes of generating spare parts catalogs, ranging from 2 weeks to 4 hours per catalog;
  • freeing employees from low added value activities;
  • provide to customers an easy, intuitive 3D tools, eliminating the waste of time in component search, and ensuring error-free data and codes to the service;
  • create a better perception of customer service, increasing loyalty and business opportunities.

In this way, Emmeti is positioned as one of the most innovative players in the industry, not only for products but also for service.


The future of the 3D catalog

At present, thanks to the SAP management system, it is possible to have all the data on the parts used already in the production phase of the machine, and then generate the catalog at a later time.

Each piece is completed by a series of information, such as the waiting time to get it, and the nearest place to buy it, because the reference market is worldwide. From the catalog you can highlight the list of necessary spare parts and print a purchase order.

The next step is to equip the various parts of the machine with a code that can be recognized through a program for tablet. And again, with Industry 4.0 logic, start collecting data to make predictive and scheduled maintenance, ordering and replacing parts before breakage, and reducing risk of machine stoppage. Information management will then allow, on a statistical basis, a quality check on the pieces, also highlighting the chances of breaking the part at the start of use (child mortality).

Additionally, the evolution of the 3D program will allow EMMETI to offer animation and video tutorials for workpiece replacement and maintenance work, benefiting the maintenance technicians of the company that purchased EMMETI machines.
